cut copy was one of my favorite shows at sxsw this year. at their best, they channeled new order... at their worst, a dancier voxtrot. their live set even made me revisit their last album with a new perspective. so here are two of my favorite friday-friendly tracks, one old, one new.

lykke li was one of my sxsw regrets. as in, i missed seeing her even though she played like 8 shows. at the time, i hadn't really heard much of her stuff. but lately, her album has become part of my regular rotation. it's fun, sweet, poppy, nothing life changing. but bonus points for being swedish. above is her new video for "i'm good, i'm gone." below is a link to that song, and another one i really lykke. despite the daft involvement, i'm not that into sexuality, the newish album from sebastian tellier. but i am a pretty big fan of this song and this video. and it feels appropriately sunny for today. like a sunny day makeout in the park. or... something. fay leshner? enjoy.

tim fite :: a little bit
i've already told nick this song will be our sxsw anthem.

tim fite is a paradox tucked inside a puzzle wrapped in an enigma. things i know about him: all his samples come from records he found in the dollar bin. his bio claims he's one of the small number of babies born between 1975 and 1983 without any blood. his music sounds like the kind of magic you felt when you first heard beck.

aaaaand... now you love rahim too.

i have a few rahim tracks, but truth be told, i only needed to hear this one. i plan to see them play at sxsw. and to pick up their new album ideal lives at their april 6 record release party put on by our favorite cracker friends. in other accolades, they've been compared to fugazi and les savy fav live and oh my rockness big hearts them.

fiona apple :: tymps (the sick in the head song) ::
proving again, she never has to jump an octave or tug a heartstring to create a most moving, emotional song.

in spite of my normal "i hate girl singers" policy - i actually have a huge girl crush on fiona. i wore out my copy of tidal in college (uh, not quite in that porn sounding kind of way). since then, she's been doing some experimenting of her own - with lyrical structure, vocal rhythm and sound arrangement. and on new album extraordinary machine it all pays off in a beautiful carnival of sound. if you didn't already hear the free fiona fiasco - her record label had completely shelved the album (first recorded with producer jon brion) for two years, deeming it unmarketable... idiots.

(on a side note, that reminds me... anyone know what the fuck happened to paul thomas anderson? not a peep since punch drunk love...)



the liars :: the other side of mt. heart attack ::
clearly they've traded in the caffeinated post-punk of their first album for the other, more european, kind of "coffeeshop."

each liars album has been such a different experience. i loved their first oh-so-spazzy-and-clever one. i kinda dug the second witch-themed one, but didn't ever really get as into it. this one. i'm psyched. from the tracks i've heard so far this album is gonna bloom into something big... melodic yelps over sonic soundscapes. turns out moving to europe to get over karen o. must really agree with angus.



the raconteurs ::store bought bones ::
as brilliant and effortless as you would expect from the man in red (and white.)

the raconteurs is jack white's new band - with brendon benson, jack lawrence and patrick keeleryou. while there are still undercurrents of the blues-y stripes sound, "it's a whole new band - a dual attack with dual guitars, dual vocals, and dual songwriting." their debut album broken boy soldiers releases this may. only two tracks have leaked so far, this one and "steady as she goes." i can share or you can also hear both on the media section of their site. (either way you should definitely check out their DOS-esque website for a little journey back in computer time.) no word on a u.s. tour yet.

the jose gonzalez i'm selling is the swedish-by-way-of-argentinian-parents guitar plucker responsible for the beautiful track that plays while 250,000 bouncy balls take over san francisco (in the amazing sony bravia commercial).

lots of comparisons to nick drake and tim buckley with a tropicalia twist. i also hear a little simon & garfunkel in there... but it's definitely hushed and lush and you'll probably need to silence your cell phone at the concert:

when it comes to hyping minneapolis band tapes 'n tapes, this post probably falls somewhere between the inno vators and the rest of the curve.

there's absolutely nothing postpunk-y or swedish or state-themed about em. in fact, i swear there's not a single violin on the entire album. but jac lynn, you still best live out your early adopter dreams while you can, because after next week's slate of shows at the delancey, piano's, mercury lounge & rothko, you can bet the tapes 'n tapes stair-car will be full of hop ons.

i had some niiiice quality time with new album the loon on my 5 1/2 hour drive to syracuse and can tell you it's great all the way through. i'm pretty sure at one point or another, i declared each song my favorite (to my cat, who was loving life in his carrier in the backseat) so i had a lot of trouble choosing just 3 to share.

but i did. so check out these tracks and then feel free to volunteer for which show you'll be joining me.

proud home of the human league and the cockers (both joe and jarvis), sheffield, england has declared itself the birthplace of electronic pop. but don't let that fool you, sheffield is also home to def leppard. and my favorite new lyrical gangsters - arctic monkeys.

a bit more info on the cheeky monkeys: often genre-d as the libertines meet the streets (a.k.a. crack). legend has it, this is how the band earned their name. recently signed with domino, they don't even have an album yet. but at live shows the singer actually has to ask permission to sing his own chorus. and lastly, while mp3-swapping with a guy in sheffield for more of their tracks (shut up) i was offered any arctic monkey i wanted, "except matt, because he has a girlfriend."

this song is goodness. and it's stuck in my head right now. i saw gorillaz play in scotland once... although i didn't actually see them because they carried through on the whole cartoon band concept and played behind a screen running with images of their animated alter-egos. which was kinda cool, but mostly lame. sounded good though. if you don't already know, gorillaz iz damon albarn (of blur), miho hatori (of cibo mato), dangermouse (of the grey album mashup) who replaces dan the automator, and MF Doom and other rappers who replace del tha funky homosapien. in other words, most of the zombie bizness is gone this time. you might have heard this song on the new ipod commercial unless of course you've been living under a rock and/or you're nick or nate.

yo brooklyn, yo bronx! i love this song. and it's stuck in my head riiiight... now. fannypack are 3 jennys from the block just barely out of high school. oh hi nick, when did you get here? they were put together and hipster-ified by nyc DJ's matt goias and fancy (yes, fancy) who take teeny bopper hip hop (teeny hopper) and turn it into rhein-gold. on their last album, they used a yeah yeah yeah's sample in things and managed to get a video on MTV for cameltoe including lyrics like "is your crotch hungry girl? cause it's eating your pants..." this is the only song i've heard off their new one so far. but i rike their bass. their beat is correct. and clearly, they still love them some 'gina jokes.
