See this doc: "The First Saturday In May"

A friend of mine from college made this movie with his brother. It follows 6 horses and their human entourages as they try to make it to the Kentucky Derby. Amazingly, one of the horses was Barbaro. It's a great sports story, even if you don't follow racing or loiter at the OTB.
It's getting some great reviews and I highly recommend it.
In NYC it's playing at cinema village (12th St/University)

untucked. and on fire.
Untucked is Lewis L. Fowler, Charles Divak, Steve Giraldi and Jonathan
Emmerling, in that order.
Untucked was formed in 2005 for tax reasons.
Untucked draws inspiration from The Kids in the Hall, Michel Gondry,
pocket tees and Macaulay Culkin.
Untucked will shoot your wedding for $75,000. We will do a very weird job.
Untucked doesn’t mean what it says when it drinks.
Untucked loves you in a needy, smothering kind of way.
oodles more untucked genius right here.
i suck for not posting this sooner. i'll do a way better update shortly.
and look at all the press they're getting.
GO JONATHAN! and steve! and the other 2 untuckers who i've hung out with briefly at various concerts!

Going Back to My Roots

Don't think I don't know where I came from. It's nice to be bloggin all over the place. Anyways, this is obvies more relevant for the let's do this kids. Anyways, my friends run this little festival in SF called Noisepop and there are some good bands that play, one of whom was our little Ghostland Observatory (who by the way are pretty much HUGE now). Anyways, they played a two and a half hour set, WTF? Did we even know they had that many songs? They had two encores! Awesome for them. So while Robbie was drinking their beer in the dressing room, my friend Julie was out there getting some good pics of the band which you can check out HERE.

Important SXSW Update

Gabe works at a plant nursery. Heather does too. The only thing between them is the man in the green jumpsuit.
Jessie did a short (15 minutes that will change your life!) film this past fall, and it was picked up for the SXSW Film Festival. More info, including showtimes, is here. If you're going to be around, go check it out at the Dobie. Jessie will be answering questions after the film...in the Dobie food court. Or maybe the Schlotsky's around the corner, depends on how snacky she's feeling. And, you know, if anyone has questions for her.

tomorrow

the powerful new film from acclaimed editor aaron curran
(and acclaimed doc director rory kennedy)
Ghosts of Abu Ghraib
Premieres on HBO. Thursday, February 22 at 9:30pm.
The familiar and disturbing pictures of torture at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison raise many troubling questions: How did torture become an accepted practice at Abu Ghraib? Did U.S. government policies make it possible? How much damage has the aftermath of Abu Ghraib had on America's credibility as a defender of freedom and human rights around the world? Acclaimed filmmaker Rory Kennedy looks beyond the headlines to investigate the psychological and political context in which torture occurred.
read this compelling review from sundance.
"get ready for the feel good movie of the year"
- me
it's just like "animal house on the night shift"
- several army higher-ups (referring to the abu ghraib photos)
if you don't have HBO, don't worry.
"i’m sure most sports bars will be playing it..."

*all proceeds benefit southern mutual help's rural recovery response program. which, in a place where the government has been totally ineffectual, has been instrumental in finding ways to funnel relief funds into the hands of those who need them most, and how they need them most. e.g. setting up direct accounts for families at the local lumber yard.

if lovin' the guadalupe is wrong, i don't wanna be right.
#1 - 108 may not win for best temperature, but it doesn't really matter when you have ice cubes in your bra and you're watching the arcade fire**.
#2 - there will be thousands upon thousands of photos of filthy feet posted on flickr this week.
#3 - you don't have to smoke cigarettes to get the black lung disease.
#4 - whoever you're looking for will inevitably be near the beer mug flag... no wait, 15 people in front of the whataburger... right there, just to the left of spongebob and the easter egg looking thing... don't you see them?
#5 - jacque has a new career ahead of her as a sign language interpreter for franz ferdinand. she's also the best target for practicing throwing pistachio shells.
#6 - much like heroin, queso can be addictive even the first time you try it. just ask matt.
#7 - i need to work on my spittakes, bret is the master. seriously, the master.
#8 - you should never forget to coordinate what you're wearing with your friends. this is very important. otherwise you might wind up wearing completely different colored shirts and not matching at all. and what fun would that be? i mean, who's gonna bother taking pictures of you posing on the hood of a bright yellow car if you're not wearing your matching green striped polo shirts?
#9 - there are people who will wear their ACL 05 wristbands all year long, just to do it. but thankfully, none of my friends will be those people.
#10 - jumping in with a noodle and tecate is nice. but cruising with a tube and a bullet is divine.***
*matt's not very good at keeping surprises.
**coldplay loves the arcade fire. a lot. and they'll tell you so. a lot.
***ok ok, let's not argue. next time we'll just have to do both.
